A preliminary discussion of the idea of a new stadium was under way soon after the close of the 1916 championship season. Ground was broken for the Stadium in formal ceremonies August 3, 1921.
Designed by architect Howard Dwight Smith and built in 1922 at a total cost of $1.4 million, The ‘Shoe is one of the most recognizable stadiums today.
